Why My Passion is Photography?

By Betty Bassett

Is photography our eyes to the world? Photography captures the moment and preserves it in the context of history.

Photographers archive the events of life. Photographers bring attention to the moment of poignancy. They direct our eyes and hearts.

I shoot pictures because it is a way of capturing time. My kids will never be that young again. My photography etches the journey of my life. It answers the question of my personal adventure, my experience of the time in which I live. Because I am the photographer so then my camera conveys what I see in the way that I see it. The image is my personal statement.

Why am I driven to take pictures? Maybe it's because photography is a universal language that anyone can understand. It is a conveyance of poetry. It's a personal portrayal of time, a way of stepping back from the world to take a mental note and a way of stepping forward in the world by showing up amid the throng of things.

There is a peace in knowing that I have had claim to a singular moment that existed, that can never be taken away. I was there.
